People are the life blood of foodbanks. Your skills could be just what we need.

People are the driving force behind foodbanks. There are thousands of team members across the UK, helping the Trussell Foodbank Network get emergency food to people in crisis. We want you to enjoy working with us and there are lots of ways to get involved. Whatever role you choose, you will make a real difference to the life of someone in crisis.

Team roles

A good set of IT skills is required for all of our roles – applicants should be proficient in using Google Suite, email on Android phones and tablets, connecting devices to WiFi hotspots, and using the Trussell’s Data Collection System (for which training will be provided).

Admin Volunteer

Admin volunteers support us to keep on top of all our enquiries (email and phone) whether it be people wishing to volunteer or people looking for help. They provide a friendly first point of contact for those looking to support or get help from us.

  • Where: remote
  • When: ideally between 9am and 5:30PM during the week, 5 hrs per week
  • Who: organised, confident using Google Suite and Gmail and tech, friendly and customer focused.

Social Media Volunteer

We need help to raise our profile by being really hot on social media. We need a team of volunteers to create content and schedule posts across LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram.

  • Where: remote and out and about (getting content)
  • When: when you like, minimum of an hour per week
  • Who: Love socials, creative, open to learning to use Canva, Meta Business Suite and the art of getting us seen.

Community Events Volunteers

Community Events volunteers  host stalls at events and at supermarket collection events, deliver assemblies and talks to school and groups to help raise our profile and increase donations (food and funds). Attending community events is something we want to do much more of in 2026 so you have the chance to help shape our offer, create presentations and offer your creativity to the role.

  • Where: Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock
  • When: various events across the year, willing to volunteers at least 3 events per year
  • Who: Great with people, enthusiastic and love to talk.

Warehouse Volunteer

We need help to weigh, sort and store donated food before it’s made into parcels for clients to collect. You could help in this vital work to ensure we have the right food available at all times.

  • Where: Letchworth (13 Such Close, Works Road, Letchworth Garden City, SG6 1JF)
  • When: Tuesday or Friday 9:00 – 12:00.
  • Who: able to lift and carry, organised, likes being behind the scenes.

Welcome Centre Volunteer

Our Foodbank Welcome Centre volunteers provide a warm welcome to clients when they come to collect their food parcels. They guide clients through the visit to the centre, offer a listening ear and signpost clients to further support.

  • Where: Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock
  • When: Tuesday or Friday 9:30 – 12:15
  • Who: Good listener, great with people and love a cuppa.

Volunteer Driver

Our drivers help us to move donated goods from various collection points to our warehouse and to deliver parcels to our foodbank centres ready for distribution to clients.

  • Where: based at Letchworth (13 Such Close, Works Road, Letchworth Garden City, SG6 1JF) with delivery across Letchworth, Hitchin and Baldock.
  • When: Tuesday or Friday 9:00 – 12:00.
  • Who: able to lift and carry, willing to use own car for volunteering (and get permission from their insurer), enjoys a practical volunteering role.

Employee Volunteering

If you are an organisation looking for volunteering opportunities for your employees please take a look at our opportunities and see if any of these would be suitable for your team. The majority of our roles require regular commitment so we can ensure volunteers have the support and training to help deliver our service to the highest standard so please do keep this in mind.

Community Events volunteer roles can be a great option for employees and we occasionally need extra help sorting stock in our warehouse during Harvest and Christmas. Alternatively, running a food collection at your company or doing a fundraiser (think bake sale or sponsored event) are great ways to offer your support. Contact us to find out more.

Volunteer duties

We will do our best to accommodate anyone who wishes to volunteer, but the nature of the tasks involved does mean that some lifting and carrying will be required. We have guidance on the correct way to undertake these tasks and we expect heavy items to be lifted by two or more people.
